Urbis
What’s your current job?
Senior Consultant in the Urban Planning team at Urbis, Gold Coast.
What do you love the most about your job?
What I love most about my current role at Urbis is the ability to work across sectors, geographies, disciplines, and scales. The projects I work on range from individual houses and small apartment buildings, to masterplanned communities and city shaping development.
Why did you choose a career in planning?
A career in Planning is a career at the nexus of people and places, playing a crucial and influential role in the shaping of cities and places for the present and the future. The ability to make a tangible and positive impact on cities and communities was what drew me to Planning as a career and it’s what keeps me excited every day.
What are some of the most interesting projects that you’ve worked on?
I’ve been privileged to work on many interesting projects at Urbis, some highlights being:
- North Harbour, a masterplanned community in Moreton Bay including a mix of housing, industrial land, commercial development, and a future marina.
- Palais, a high-rise in Coolangatta, Gold Coast, that involves the revitalisation of a heritage building and residential apartments above.
- The Star Gold Coast, an integrated casino and resort in Broadbeach, Gold Coast, involves the multi-staged rollout of luxury hotels and apartments.
Why should someone choose a career in planning?
Planning is an exciting, complex, and diverse profession that covers more than you probably think. It’s a profession of generalists and specialists, strategic thinkers and policymakers, city shapers and city makers. Planners work with a wide range of other professionals, as well as governments and communities.
We need more Planners.
What three words would you use to describe planning?
Multidisciplinary. Forward-thinking. Exciting.
Planning is the process through which people, businesses and government come together to protect, grow and shape their cities, towns and regions. Cities and neighbourhoods are constantly changing and evolving. Planning is how we guide this change to create great communities and places in which we can live, work and play.
