Careers

When you become a planner, there’s lots of different career paths to choose from.

You could work in statutory planning, where you’ll assess and submit planning applications for land use changes and development proposals. These planners work with others to change land uses and develop land under existing planning legislation!

You could work in strategic planning, where you’ll get to make, review and improve policy, legislation and plans… lots of plans!  You’ll also get to engage with the community on the futures they want to see.

You could work in social planning, where you’ll  identify community needs, analyse the social impacts of development, and design strategies to improve and benefit our community.

You could also focus on transport planning or environmental planning or infrastructure planning… or many other specialities as well!

Planners also collaborate with:

  • Government and elected officials
  • Environmental advisors
  • Architects and landscape architects
  • Civil and environmental engineers
  • Economists
  • Lawyers
  • Property and real estate developers
  • First Nations peoples and Traditional Owners

Planning is the process through which people, businesses and government come together to protect, grow and shape their cities, towns and regions. Cities and neighbourhoods are constantly changing and evolving. Planning is how we guide this change to create great communities and places in which we can live, work and play.
